The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 General Election.
The decision was reached during a meeting held on Friday between INEC and its Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), where the proposed exercise was reviewed alongside other electoral matters.
According to a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the voter revalidation exercise is an essential part of INEC’s responsibility to maintain a credible and updated National Register of Voters.
He explained that the exercise is intended to verify and update voter records, correct inaccurate personal information, remove duplicate or ineligible entries, and improve the integrity of the voter register. It is also designed to give registered voters the opportunity to confirm and amend their details where necessary.
Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections across Nigeria.
