Offa Robbery: I Have Nothing to Do With Any Crime, Saraki Insists, Blasts Kwara Governor Over ‘Frivolous’ Charges |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has vehemently denied any connection to the 2018 Offa armed robbery, describing fresh charges initiated against him by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as a politically motivated abuse of court process.

Saraki, in a statement issued on Friday in response to what he termed a deliberate campaign of defamation, said the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) under the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation had twice cleared him of any culpability in the matter.

“For the Senate President and the Kwara State Governor, this office is unable to establish from the evidence in the interim report a nexus between the alleged offence and the suspects,” Saraki quoted the DPP’s first legal advice dated June 22, 2018, as stated.

A second DPP opinion dated August 23, 2018, was equally unambiguous: “With regards to the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, since there is no departure from the earlier findings in the interim report, this office is still unable to establish any prima facie case against him for any offences of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide.”

The former Senate President said four suspects were subsequently charged and convicted on the basis of the police investigation, with the conviction upheld on appeal and the matter now pending before the Supreme Court.

Saraki accused Governor AbdulRazaq of deliberately suppressing the DPP reports while circulating what he described as “skewed documents” as paid newspaper advertisements, even before formally serving the defendants with court processes.

“These are deliberate efforts to mislead the media and induce them to give purchased publicity to the frame-up,” Saraki said, adding that the governor’s action followed his recent interview on Channels Television in which he criticised the administration’s handling of insecurity in the state.

He described the renewed charges as a political vendetta, alleging that the original Offa robbery case was “designed under the Buhari administration with the connivance of some individuals from Kwara State as an instrument of blackmail to seize political power” from his political group ahead of the 2019 elections.

Saraki also questioned the governor’s priorities, noting that over 400 residents had been killed in bandit attacks across the state between January 2025 and March 2026, with more than 100 others kidnapped, yet the governor remained focused on “filing frivolous and politically motivated charges against his predecessors.”

“A sitting governor who is accusing his two immediate predecessors of armed robbery is only making a mockery of the institution,” the former Senate President said.

He expressed confidence that the judiciary would dismiss the charges, saying his legal team had been fully briefed and would respond appropriately in court.
