Vladimir Putin met with Abbas Araghchi on Monday in St. Petersburg, expressing hope for a swift resolution to ongoing conflicts involving Iran and the broader Middle East.
During the meeting, the Russian president reaffirmed Moscow’s support for Tehran, emphasising a desire for peace and stability in the region. According to Russia’s state news agency, Putin stated that Russia would take steps aligned with Iran’s interests and those of the wider region to help bring about peace as quickly as possible.
Russia, a long-standing ally of Iran, has so far avoided direct involvement in escalating Middle East tensions, as it remains focused on its ongoing military campaign in Ukraine.
Araghchi’s visit to Russia follows recent diplomatic engagements in Pakistan and Oman, where he held discussions with mediators regarding the Middle East crisis. Efforts to restart negotiations between Iran and the United States remain stalled.
Reports by the Associated Press and Axios indicate that Iran recently proposed a deal to the United States aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal reportedly includes delaying nuclear negotiations to a later stage.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump appeared to acknowledge the development, with a White House spokesperson telling Bloomberg News that the United States maintains a strong position in the negotiations.
Iran’s Fars News Agency reported that diplomatic efforts are ongoing, noting that Tehran has sent written communications to Washington through Pakistan as part of attempts to pave the way for a second round of talks.
