Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has thrown his weight behind his deputy, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate of choice for the 2027 governorship election, signalling an early move to shape the party’s succession agenda in the nation’s commercial capital.
The declaration was made at Lagos House, Marina, before an assembly of State Executive Council members and senior figures of the ruling party, sources within the APC told our correspondent.
Party insiders described the governor’s move as a calculated effort to preserve administrative continuity and forestall internal divisions as the next electoral cycle draws closer.
Hamzat, who has served as deputy governor since 2019, is credited with a central role in policy coordination and day-to-day governance of the state.
“He has been at the heart of this administration from day one,” a party source said. “The governor’s position is that Lagos cannot afford a disruption in direction.”
Reacting to Governor SanwoOlu endorsement, Dr. Hamzat said “I am honoured by the endorsement of my Governor, my brother and my friend, HE Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.”
“His trust means a great deal to me. We’ve worked side by side in the service of Lagos State, and I don’t take this vote of confidence lightly.”
“I remain committed to building on the progress we’ve made together, and look forward to serving Lagosians with integrity, focus and a clear sense of purpose, he said.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that several aspirants are expected to signal their interest in the months ahead, potentially forcing a round of consultations within the party’s structure.
As of press time, the APC national secretariat had yet to issue any official response to the endorsement. The Lagos APC also offered no formal comment.
