The Delta State Police Command condemned the alleged extra-judicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun last Sunday.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the incident occurred after operatives from the Area Command in Effurun received intelligence from members of the public.
The suspect was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
Police operatives were deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody. However, the officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of Force Order 237 and the Nigeria Police Force’s Standard Operating Procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered the immediate arrest of ASP Usman. The officer has since been transferred to the State Headquarters in Asaba and subsequently moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he is expected to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for possible sanctions and prosecution.
The Command reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, human rights, professionalism, and accountability, stressing a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions.
CP Oyeniyi extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be pursued. He also urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations continue.
