Senate Declares Ondo South Seat Vacant Following Ibrahim’s UN Appointment|LAGOS EYE NEWS

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has officially declared the Ondo South senatorial seat vacant.

The announcement was made during Tuesday’s plenary session, following the appointment of Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Akpabio stated that the vacancy takes immediate effect in accordance with constitutional provisions guiding legislative membership.

He also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election within 30 days to fill the vacant position.

Under the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Senate is mandated to formally notify the electoral body whenever a seat becomes vacant, triggering the process for a fresh election.

Before his diplomatic appointment, Ibrahim represented Ondo South Senatorial District under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
