Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested an 18-year-old suspected vandal caught removing reflective road studs from the Third Mainland Bridge, in an act police say puts the lives of thousands of daily commuters at risk.

The suspect, Dogara John, was apprehended on Sunday at approximately 5:30 p.m., while allegedly tampering with the safety installations on the bridge.

In a statement released by Abimbola Adebisi, Police Public Relations Officer, said a search conducted at the scene led to the recovery of 20 reflective road studs found in his possession.

Reflective road studs are critical road safety fixtures designed to improve visibility and guide motorists along road lanes, particularly at night and in adverse weather conditions making their removal on a high-traffic artery like the Third Mainland Bridge especially dangerous.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, condemned the act, reiterating the Command’s zero tolerance for vandalism and any wilful damage to public infrastructure.

He warned that such conduct not only endangers lives but also undermines sustained efforts to maintain safety and order across the state.

CP Fatai called on residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities around public infrastructure to the nearest police station or via the Command’s emergency lines.

The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue.
