The Lagos State Government has dismissed as false a report claiming that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was directed to resign on health grounds.
In a statement issued on Monday, the governor’s media aide, Gboyega Akosile, described the publication by Sahara Reporters as “entirely false” and misleading. The report had alleged that the deputy governor was set to assume office following an alleged directive for Sanwo-Olu to step down.
The statement emphasised that no such directive was given and reaffirmed that the governor remains in good health and is actively performing his duties in Lagos State.
According to the government, earlier in the day, Sanwo-Olu received the Deputy Governor, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, who paid a courtesy visit to formally inform him of his intention to contest for the governorship.
The meeting, the statement noted, was cordial and in line with standard political consultations.
Akosile criticised Sahara Reporters for what he described as a pattern of publishing unverified and misleading information.
He added that although such reports are often ignored, the government deemed it necessary to respond in order to prevent public misinformation.
The Lagos State Government urged residents to disregard the report and treat it as fake news.
