All private schools across Oyo State will be closed on Friday, June 5, 2026, in solidarity with calls for the safe release of pupils and teachers recently kidnapped in Ogbomoso.
The directive was announced in a communiqué issued by the Coalition of Non-State Schools in Oyo State (CONSSOS), which also declared the day a statewide prayer session for peace, security, and the safe return of the victims.
According to the coalition, all private educational institutions are expected to observe a one-day shutdown and organize special prayer gatherings within their communities. The prayers will focus on seeking divine intervention for the release of the abducted pupils and teachers, as well as the protection of schools across the state.
CONSSOS urged parents, guardians, school proprietors, and teachers to actively participate in the prayer activities, describing the initiative as a collective response to the growing security challenges facing educational institutions.
The coalition also condemned the recent kidnapping incidents in the Yawota and Esiele communities of Ogbomoso, calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property and ensure the immediate rescue of the victims.
The planned closure comes amid heightened security concerns in Oyo State following the abduction of several students and teachers.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that the incidents have already disrupted academic activities, with public school teachers reportedly embarking on an indefinite strike over safety concerns.
Stakeholders have expressed hope that the combined efforts of security agencies, government authorities, and community members will lead to the safe release of the captives and the restoration of confidence in the state’s education sector.
