Ghana Police Arrest Six Suspects Over AI Deepfake Scam Impersonating President Mahama|LAGJ3

The Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) under the Inspector-General of Police of the Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects, including five Nigerians, over an alleged cyber fraud operation involving AI-generated deepfake videos impersonating Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.

According to police sources, the suspects were apprehended during a cyber field tracking operation conducted on May 4, 2026, in Aflao in Ghana’s Volta Region.

The arrested suspects were identified as Nigerian nationals Bishop Esiri, 46; Wisdom James, 25; Ali Lucky, 23; Edwin Edos, 22; and Danu Peter, 19. The sixth suspect, John Kofi Darlington, 20, is a Ghanaian national.

Security operatives reportedly recovered several items during the operation, including laptop computers, mobile phones, internet routers, 120 pre-registered SIM cards, and a Nigerian-registered Mercedes-Benz ML 350 bearing Lagos registration number LSR 138HR.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly created and circulated fraudulent AI-generated video content impersonating President Mahama to deceive unsuspecting members of the public online.

Investigators said the fake videos were allegedly used to solicit money and obtain sensitive personal information through various digital platforms.

Authorities further revealed that the suspects are believed to be part of a broader cybercrime network involved in producing and distributing deceptive digital content designed to impersonate high-profile personalities for financial gain.

The Ghana Police Service said investigations are ongoing to identify additional members of the syndicate and uncover the full scope of the operation.
