The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has announced plans to commence paid parking on designated streets across the state as part of efforts to improve traffic management and parking orderliness.
The General Manager of LASPA, Adebisi Adelabu, disclosed this during a stakeholder engagement meeting with the Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Area, Akeem Dauda, and members of the council’s management team.
The development was contained in a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs at LASPA, Dunkwu Divine.
According to Adelabu, the On-Street Parking Scheme will begin with a pilot phase in selected local government areas, including Ikeja. She explained that the initiative is designed to improve parking management, ease traffic congestion and create employment opportunities for residents.
“The On-Street Parking Scheme will improve parking management, enhance traffic flow and generate employment opportunities, particularly for residents within the selected areas,” she said.
Adelabu noted that the responsibility for managing parking operations was initially under local government authorities before it was transferred to LASPA by the Conference of the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
She added that local councils would benefit from the scheme based on their level of cooperation and urged them to support the implementation process.
Responding, Dauda welcomed the initiative and assured LASPA of the council’s support.
He also called for increased public sensitisation to adequately prepare residents ahead of the commencement of the scheme.
